Winemaker Peter Jackson believes his role as winemaker is to grow the best grapes, then simply steer the fruit in the right direction in order to best express the vibrant fruit flavours that Marlborough. The wine is brooding initially, with clove spice, brazil nut and omega plum aromatics. The palate is supple with dense ripe fruit and a youthful backbone to support ageing. It is perfect for beef or Beijing duck with rich sauce, and it has the potential of hoarding for five to eight years

Yealands Estate Single Vineyard Pinot Noir  | New Zealand | Awatere Valley, Marlborough

Yealands Estate is a large wine estate located in the Awatere Valley in Marlborough New Zealand. Like many in the region, Yealands is best known for its wines made from Sauvignon Blanc, although Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling also feature in the portfolio. Yealands has several tiers of wines, the most exclusive being its Estate Reserve, which includes a Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc and is only produced in the best years. Yealands's single-vineyard Pinot is a dense, rich wine that currently sits under a blanket of mealy, charred oak. There's plump red berry fruit and earthy, peppery nuances, too, and the fruit does fight its way to the fore with time in the glass or decanter, but the barrel nevertheless wears a heavy cloak, which encircles the palate as well. Tannins are savory, and there's an appealing silky texture, but the oak feels sour and mealy, particularly at the finish.

    Akarua Rua Pinot Noir

Akarua was established in 1996 by Sir Clifford Skeggs and is the largest family owned winery in Central Otago. Akarua currently owns five vineyards with two located in the prestigious Bannockburn sub-region in Central Otago. Andrew Keenleyside the winemaker, and his team, are focused on managing the quality of fruit grown in our vineyard through to winemaking on our own on-site winery enabling us to have complete control from vineyard through to bottle.
This Central Otago Pinot Noir is generous with layers of sweet, ripe, red berries, subtle savoury characters and a touch of spice. Soft, supple tannins flow gently across the palate. These are balanced by the wines acidity, leading to a long fruit driven finish. Typical Central Otago with a core of juicy red berry fruit and uninhibited by heavy oak influence.

    Variety Description

    Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler regions, but the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. When young, wines made from Pinot noir tend to have red fruit aromas of cherries, raspberries and strawberries. As the wines age, Pinots have the potential to develop vegetal and "barnyard" aromas that can contribute to the complexity of the wine.

    Country Description

    New Zealand

New Zealand wine is largely produced in ten major wine growing regions spanning from north to south Northland, Auckland, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury/Waipara and Central Otago. New Zealand red wines are typically made from a blend of varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and much less often Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec), or Pinot Noir. In white wines Chardonnay and Sauvignon blanc predominate in plantings and production. New Zealand is home to what many wine critics consider the world’s best Sauvignon blanc.
