    Description

    Established in 1925, Ortas is a co-operative winery made up of many of the best growers in the Rasteau appellation. They are committed to expressing the terroir of Rasteau and the unique qualities of the old-growth vines found in many of the rocky vineyard sites. 
    This delicious, spicy red is Ortas’ top cuvée, made from a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. It has rich aromas of earthy, brambly fruit and dark chocolate lifted by perfumed black cherry. Powerful yet polished, persistent palate with concentrated fruit and an attractive hint of orange freshness on the finish.

    Variety Description

    Grenache

    Grenache or Garnacha is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. It ripens late, so it needs hot, dry conditions such as those found in Spain, where the grape probably originated, Sardinia, the south of France, and California. It is generally spicy, berry-flavoured and soft on the palate with a relatively high alcohol content. Wines made from Grenache tend to lack acid, tannin and color, and is usually blended with other varieties such as Syrah, Carignan, Tempranillo and Cinsaut.

    Syrah

    Syrah (also known as Shiraz) is a dark-skinned grape variety grown throughout the world and used primarily to produce red wine. The style and flavour profile of wines made from Syrah is influenced by the climate where the grapes are grown with moderate climates (such as the northern Rhone Valley) tending to produce medium to full-bodied wines with medium to high levels of tannins and flavours of blackberry, mint and black pepper notes. In hot climates (such as the Barossa Valley of Australia), Syrah is more consistently full-bodied with softer tannin, jammier fruit and spice notes of liquorice, anise and earthy leather. In many regions the acidity and tannin levels of Syrah allows to have favorable aging potential.

    Mourvèdre

    Mourvèdre (also known as Mataró or Monastrell) is a red wine grape variety that is grown in many regions around the world including the Rhône and Provence regions of France, the Valencia and Jumilla denominación de origens of Spain, California and Washington State in USA, and the Australian regions of South Australia and New South Wales. In addition to making red varietal wines, Mourvèdre is a prominent component in "GSM" (Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre) blends. The variety is also used to make rosé and port-style fortified wines. Mourvèdre tends to produce tannic wines that can be high in alcohol. The style of wine produced from the grapes varies greatly according to where it is produced, but according to wine expert Jancis Robinson Mourvèdre wines often have wild game and/or earthy notes to them, with soft red fruit flavors.

    Practically all the most famous grape varieties used in the world's wines are French varieties, and wine is produced all throughout France. France is the second largest wine producer in the world after Italy. The wines produced range from expensive high-end wines sold internationally to more modest wines usually only seen within France.     Region Description

    Rhône

    The Rhône wine region in Southern France is situated in the Rhône river valley and produces numerous wines. The region's major appellation in production volume is Côtes du Rhône AOC. The Rhône is generally divided into two sub-regions with distinct traditions, the Northern Rhône (referred to in French as Rhône septentrional) and the Southern Rhône (in French Rhône méridional). The northern sub-region produces red wines from the Syrah grape, sometimes blended with white wine grapes, and white wines from Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier grapes. The southern sub-region produces an array of red, white and rosé wines, often blends of several grapes such as in Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
